Purdue University Senior Vice President Steve Schultz on the legacy of Amelia Earhart. The pioneering aviator joined Purdue in 1935, helping women explore career opportunities and advising the university’s aeronautics program.
Now, Purdue will help support a new expedition to search for Earhart’s lost plane, which disappeared on July 2, 1937.
Led by Archaeological Legacy Institute Executive Director Richard Pettigrew, the team will investigate the Taraia Object, a “visual anomaly” in a lagoon on a remote Pacific island. Some researchers believe Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, became stranded there after failing to reach Howland Island.
Pettigrew called the evidence supporting the theory “compelling,” adding, “The only way to answer this question is to go.”
Organizers first announced the expedition in 2025 but postponed it while awaiting approval from the government of Kiribati. The team will set out in October.
