Tim Andrews, now 68, on his decision to receive a pig kidney at Massachusetts General Hospital in January 2025. Andrews admits he “didn’t think [he] was going to live through it,” but his doctors recently reported in The Lancet that the kidney kept him off dialysis for a record 271 days before he received a human kidney.
According to his doctors, Andrews’ case shows the potential for xenotransplantation — transplanting an organ from one species into another — to act as a “bridge” for patients awaiting a kidney. Nearly 110,000 people currently sit on the national organ transplant waiting list, most of them awaiting kidneys.
