New York City's Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jason Graham in an interview with ABC News announcing that 25 years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, his office and the NYPD identified a World Trade Center victim for the first time using forensic investigative genetic genealogy, a technique that combines DNA testing with family tree research. The woman — whose family chose to keep her identity private — marks the 1,654th victim identified.
To date, nearly 1,100 World Trade Center victims remain unidentified. Last year, Dr. Graham said, “As long as there are families who are continuing to seek answers, this work will continue.” He now says this new technique could offer “a remarkable way that we can keep our commitment.”
