⭐️ QUOTE TO START YOUR WEEK:
“Adventure is worthwhile in itself.”
Purdue general counsel Steve Schultz quoting Amelia Earhart as he announced that an expedition to find the aviation pioneer’s plane “did not prove to be what we hoped.” Purdue University, the Purdue Research Foundation and the Archaeological Legacy Institute had teamed up to investigate the Taraia Object — a “visual anomaly” in a remote Pacific island lagoon. According to one theory, Earhart and Fred Noonan, her navigator, became stranded there after failing to reach Howland Island in 1937.
While researchers determined the Taraia Object was likely a pile of washed-up trees, Schultz said that “the journey produced new discoveries, added to the world’s knowledge of Nikumaroro, and wrote another extraordinary chapter in a story of discovery and exploration.”
The team said it still believes in the “castaway hypothesis” — the theory that Earhart and Noonan landed on the island’s reef and were marooned. Researchers point to earlier discoveries, including a variety of objects dating to the 1930s — such as a woman’s shoe and a freckle cream jar — as potential clues, though nothing conclusively links the pair to the island.
